Madness In Print  Chart Songwords - February, 1980 - My Girl

From a first look at the title of the new single by Madness, which is 'My Girl', it might not be such a bad guess to expect a Two Tone version of the classic soul ballad written by Smokey Robinson and taken into the chart by both Otis Redding and the Temptations back in the first mod era, about fifteen years ago. In fact, it would be a very bad guess, because anyone with a copy of the first Madness LP, 'One Step Beyond', would know that 'My Girl' is the second track on the first side of the LP, and immediately follows 'One Step Beyond', the title track itself. It's one of several tracks on the album written by Mike Barson, the group's keyboard player, and sounds somewhat like Squeeze - funny, really, because most people immediately compare Madness with Ian Dury, but I reckon they're far closer to the 'Up The Junction' group from Deptford ..... But there is a good reason for having 'My Girl' as a single - the B side of it is a new song co-written by Suggs, who's Madness's lead singer, and guitarist Chris Foreman, and it's called 'Stepping Into Line' (as opposed to 'out of line', we presume ....)
