Madness In Print  Hitkrant - 1980 - Too Crazy To Let Loose by Lex Harding

This article originally appeared in the Dutch publication Hitkrant.

Group Gold Crazy - Hitkrant News

The English seven called Madness had a flash visit to the Netherlands last week. There were several reasons: a Toppop television recording, the new LP "7" needed introduction, but most of all Madness was invited to receive some precious jewels for records sold. Veronica-deejay Lex Harding had the honor to speak to the guys during a chaotic party in "The Safe Harbour" in Loosdrecht.

The Netherlands has recently met with seven fairly insane young men from London, who in England started a massive hype with their crewcut heads and lots of humor filled jokes who, in combination with their uplifting music, can bring great enthusiam to every audience.

Hitkrant met Madness and came to the conclusion that even when the band doesn't perform, they still are pretty crazy.

During a planned photo session by Hitkrant the guys act very unfocused. After a bit of orientation they consequently do everything opposite of what the photographer asks of them. They go their own way, run into everything, pull down the background decor and put things in their pocket of which they think they can later use. A record company assistant tries to get them to behave without success.

Suggsy, the singer of Madness, understands that something should happen and in a little while later the whole band is in front of the camera. Not for long though, as stomping on the floor with everybody, is of course much more fun. In a short while the discipline is gone and the photoshoot comes to an end with lots of farting and belching.

On route to a concert in The Hague at the Trojan Horse (Paard Van Troje) Suggsy has a quick word with us: "We all come from the London area Camden Town, where we spent our teenage years and I can tell you in all honesty that we didn't have a very good name then. In '76 we put together a band and calling ourselves "Morris And The Minors". Most important was and still is to make fun and hope that the audience catches on. We hate bands who make music where you have to stand still to listen to it. Every place we play must go mental. I can't deny that because of weird things that happen. We went to the Stiff label because we could be ourselves there. Nothing is too much there and we could identify with that."

In England the band is unbelievably popular at the moment. Three well-selling singles ("The Prince", "One Step Beyond" and "My Girl") and the album "One Step Beyond" are weeks in the British album chart top 10.

Madness will go far here as well, the band proved that that evening at the concert.

We introduce you to the guys:
Mike Barson (19) / keyboards
Suggsy (19) / vocals
Mark Bedford (18) / bass
Dan Woodgate (19) / drums
Lee Thompson (22) / sax
Chas Smash (21) / dancer and poet
Chris Foreman (23) / guitar
