Madness In Print  Melody Maker - 24 October, 1981 - Star Gazing by Paolo Hewitt

TAKE it or leave it, the poster said. So naturally we took it, and found ourselves at Camden Town's Gate Three cinema for the world premier of the new Madness film entitled ... "Take It Or Leave It". Passing a wacky beat group in the foyer called, and you'll love this, Pookie Snackenburger, who were regaling the arriving guests with splendid versions of "Just One Cornetto", we found ourselves star-spotting in the bar.

Along with Midge Ure, Glenn Tilbrook, Andy Summers, Stewart Copeland, Department S, Belle Stars, Jerry Dammers, Lene Lovich, Desmond Dekker, Alexei Sayle, Clive Gregson, Neville Staples, Brad Bradbury, Johnnie Walker, Dave Stewart, Paul Gambaccini and Barbara Gaskin, we couldn't spot any, so we took our seats in the back row and laughed and cried along with the rest of them.

Afterwards everyone congratulated Dave Robinson for his film debut, Mark Bedders said "people laughed in all the places I thought they wouldn't, and didn't in the places where they should", and Woody still couldn't find his wife. (Oh that reminds us. The Mo-dettes were very much present too).

The film over, everyone then crowded the free drinks bar till at least three in the morning, whilst Pookie Snackenburger provided the music from the back of the bar.

And surprise, surprise. No-one told them to shut up - Paolo Hewitt.

SPOT the imposter: he was stood there talking to Suggsy. "C'mon lads," said the Daily Express photographer, "let's have a picture". What could he do? He agreed. The band agreed. The picture appeared in the Daily Express and no-one spotted the imposter. Can you? (Clue: He's the swarthiest in the frame, his favourite programme is "The Borgias", he eats pasta and he has been known to do the odd favourable review of the Jam.)
