Madness In Print  Look-In - March 1982 - Madness Across The World!
Madness Across The World!

They're very arresting, are Madness. People all over the place want to see them. And rightly so. What with another chart success Cardiac Arrest, they're the most successful thing to come out of North London since Tottenham's 1981 FA Cup winning side (actually, Madness were scoring hits before Spurs were scoring at Wembley).

Anyway, this year the Nutty boys have been all over the place, including Paris, Rome, Japan and America.

WHAT A MAD SCHEDULE!

Apart from Sugg's wedding and recording hit records, Madness have been putting themselves through a hectic schedule this year.

In January, they shot off to the South of France to take part in a trade fair for the music business. Then they were off up to Paris (no-one's quite sure why!) and onto Rome, where, would you believe, they appeared in "The American Circus", which is the largest 3-ring circus in Europe. Having seen them on TV, you probably know by now that the chaps are pretty fearless, and, true to their name, they determinedly rode on elephants and fed the hungry lions.

From Rome on to Milan, and then back home for a couple of days to record the Cardiac Arrest video, which was filmed in their native North London. If you're wondering, by the way, about the middle-aged one in the video, it's actually Chas who had to have special stage make-up applied. So don't worry - all the travelling hasn't really aged him that much!

To complete the filming schedule, the band were then off to Los Angeles for a week's work in front of cameras, making an advertisement for a top Japanese motorbike manufacturer. Sax-player Lee told us about the ad and their other recent adventures:

"It was the second commercial we've done. The first one was in Japan, then this one in LA, but I'd like to go back to Japan to do the third one which we're meant to do.

"In Japan we did the 'Nutty Train' and the 7 album cover poses. They were all indoors, but this time they must have had a bigger budget. We went around in a big mobile home and filmed outside. We did the train walk up and down streets and through shops."

He also told us about a brand new piece of Nuttiness called the 'combat roll' which they used in the advertisement. It's being kept secret for the time being. "It's down to Chrissy Boy -- he's going to spring it on you, but we're still busy perfecting it. You should be able to see it in the Autumn." Unfortunately one thing we won't be able to see are the commercials, as they aren't being shown in this country!

No tour plans

Although Madness always seem to be off touring somewhere in the world, or playing concerts all round this country, Lee told us there were no plans for a British tour in the near future. "We won't be touring till the end of this year or even the beginning of next," he said. "We're concentrating on the writing as it's getting harder, especially for me. When you're touring there's never any time for writing, you're always too busy.

"For me the best time for writing is at two or three in the morning. That's when I'm relaxed and there's no noise to disturb me. I think it's the same for Suggsy too." But for two other members of Madness it's quite a different story. "Chris and Mike write when we're doing the sound check just before a concert!" said Lee. "You can often hear them working out new songs."

On the subject of new songs, when can we expect a new Madness album? "We're rehearsing," said Lee. "We were meant to start recording about now, but we've put it back a bit because we want to rehearse some more."

The good news is that Madness do expect to do one or two shows around the country sometime this year.

Bagpipe players

What about Lee's involvement in Suggs's wedding? "It was really nice - they had these Scottish kids playing bagpipes outside. I felt really sorry for them, though, because it was freezing cold." For a change the band were quite well behaved at the wedding. Most of the clowning around was done at Suggsy's stag night.

"I organised it, and paid for it!" said Lee, remembering that quite a few people owed him money for it. "The band and roadies went out to eat in a restaurant in Camden Town. When we'd finished there, we thought we'd go down to see Adam And The Ants in concert. But by the time we got there they'd been on and then left secretly!"

Lee told us that they had planned a little tomfoolery for Suggs. "He knew we would try to do something so he was a bit worried all night. We were planning to stick him on a train to Scotland at five in the morning with a little label with his address on it so someone would be able to send him home! Or we were going to handcuff him to a lamp post!" laughed Lee. Fortunately Suggs didn't let the rest of the band get the better of him - otherwise he might still be missing!
