Madness Waxing Lyrical  Crowd Pleasing Sing-Alongs
There are bands that are known for their most memorable music. And there are bands whose strength lies entirely with catchy phrasing. It's a rare creature, though, where the marriage of tunes and words carry equal significance. Such is the case with our lads in Madness. With seven scribes to draw from, the lyrics of Madness are every bit as important as their chart-topping sound. Can you imagine "Baggy Trousers" sans whimsy, with Suggs instead penning a song about the economics of shaven show poodles?

MADNESS WAXING LYRICAL seeks to collate this extensive library of lyrics generated from 30 years of songwriting. With special thanks to madman/guitarist Chris "Chrissy Boy" Foreman for securing the publishing-go-ahead to use the official lyrics here at the Madness Central (as well as letting us nick the lyrics he's already transcribed for the official site), this is going to be a great reference point for the Madness fan, taking in lyrics from those songs commercially released, those played exclusively in concert, and those heard only through the good fortune of salvaged studio demoing.

MADNESS WAXING LYRICAL Project Manager, Mr. Graham Yates, is going to be taking care of things around here, so let's turn our attention to Graham for a few words:

So I open my mailbox to see a mail sitting there from Looby (Lee "Loobyloo" Buckley, also a Project Manager - amongst the heaping hill of other things she does - with Madness Central) with a subject of: "Hi Graham - Are You Up For This?" - "What am I getting roped into here?" I think to myself. Anyway, surely enough it was an invitation to assist with cataloguing all of the bands lyrics from A-Z and beyond into one place. This on the back of some work I did with Looby and the MIS gang in transcribing the lyrics for the new songs played at the recent Hackney gigs.

Looby had been careful to point out that most of the work had already been done as there existed various catalogues elsewhere around the place (including the one at the official site and the one previously put together by Simesy). "Easy," thought I, "the work has already been done" - especially as Looby had also pointed out that permission had been gained from no less that Mr C.J.Foreman to publish following top secret negotiations with the rest of the band (he asked, they said yes!! :-))....anyway having agreed and accepted the challenge with both delight and a sense of honour to have been selected the extent of the challenge is now dawning on me (especially since Looby's last mail said "We may even be looking to put up the spin-off stuff from Madness such as the Crunch!, Suggs solo, The Madness, Velvet Ghost etc." - she never told me that bit in the first mail!!! :-))

So here I am relishing the challenge ahead and gratefully accepting any offers of assistance to graham_yates@hotmail.com or more to the point any corrections to my very own misheard lyrics!!!

- Graham
