All-female group The Modettes (whose bass player Jane will marry Woody on August 30) play in support. The shows are predominantly attended by teenagers. The US Army parody chant Chipmunks Are Go, written by Carl and his younger brother Brendan, is linked to Madness. The reprises of One Step Beyond and Nightboat To Cairo close off the successful start of the UK-leg of the tour. Although the teenagers' interest forms a welcome aversion from the negative publicity, Suggs insists that Madness will not become just another teenybopper band. He tells Gavin Martin of New Musical Express: "Young kids are getting more into music; but I want to keep the older kids as well, without them getting pissed off. I enjoyed it, I thought it was a really good gig, but I start to feel patronising when I see all those kids. I feel obliged not to look menacing or something.
