encore: One Step Beyond

On this tour, Madness are augmented by two trumpeters, including Dick Cuthell, and three female backing vocalists on some of the shows. Paul Carrack plays keyboards while available. As on the previous US tour, Madness use both the ‘Complete Madness’ and ‘Rise & Fall’ sets. New PA intro track is Trio Hellenique’s Le Danse De Zorba. “Good evening Alaska” Carl quips. “We have come with a pair of moonboots”. Michael Caine has a false start because Grey Day is played first. Suggs’ “a long long time ago” – introduction forms the start of a future tradition. Upon the encore Paul Carrack performs the 1981 Squeeze hit Tempted, something he always does when he plays with other artists. Suggs and Carl supply backing vocals. A messaround tune with a Land of Hope and Glory style intro opens the second encore. Suggs reminds the crowd of Mike’s departure. Chris aims the word at a girl he met in the afternoon when the band did a record store signing session. One Step Beyond is dedicated to Ian Horne.

February 25th, 1984: LOS ANGELES, CA: University Of California

The first of three shows in Los Angeles at two different venues. The next day, Madness travel to Long Beach for another winning charity match against KROQ’s softball team.

February 27th, 29th 1984: LOS ANGELES, CA: Palace

Coinciding with these shows, the band tape a performance for television programme ‘Rock of the 80’s.’ The highlight of the tour takes place on the 29th; in the afternoon Lee marries his girlfriend Debbie at the Hard Rock Cafe.

March 2nd 1984: SAN DIEGO, CA: University Of California

Because it is the last show on the tour, Madness decide to record it. During an appearance on the children’s breakfast programme ‘Saturday Superstore’ on March 17, Lee gives away an exclusive copy of the live recording to the winner of a prize contest.
