Madness are top-of-the-bill at the ‘Christmas Party for the Unemployed’, which takes place in a heated circus tent. A full set is considered but with things going out of schedule, it is decided to skip the first eight tracks (Keep Moving/Samantha/Take It Or Leave It/Shut Up/Tomorrow’s Dream/Night Boat to Cairo/4BF/Blue Skinned Beast). “A special thanks to all those people who’ve given up their jobs to be here” Suggs says upon the band’s arrival. My Girl is dedicated to Mike and Sandra who are watching the show. It’s two years now since Madness played their last concert as a seven-piece. Carl cites Bonanza’s Theme and Chris strums the intro of In The Middle of The Night, a song that the band last played in 1981. Suggs dedicates a widely participated Yesterday’s Men to Chris who wrote the music. Our House has a false start that ends with a piano outro. Suggs gets a big round of applause for his statement about a recent article in The Financial Times suggesting that half of the households in the world have a television. He adds that “we forgot to mention the other three-quarters of the world who don’t have a household”. Ian Dury joins to take the lead on the Kilburn & The High Roads classics Huffety Puff and Rough Kids. He supplies strong backing vocals on House of Fun and takes over the “I’m sorry son” part from Suggs. “A happy Christmas, you’re terrific” Dury says upon departure. Shoparound opens the encore. Suggs congratulates his wife Anne on the eve of their fourth wedding anniversary before Madness close off with a spirited version of One Step Beyond. Positive reviews of the event appear in the international music press. Germany’s Musikexpress/Sounds captions Carl a shaded leprechaun. Rough Kids is broadcast in September 1986.
