Madness play a New Year’s Eve concert, dubbed ‘Mad Not Mad Party’ of which all proceeds (money and toys) will go to children’s homes. The show will also be partly aired on BBC Radio and Television. Suggs tells the crowd that the Old Grey Whistle Test-crew start filming by 11 o’clock. “So we might have to take a break at that moment, but we might not. Then again, the longer I run, the longer the break will be. This is about a lovely girl Lee once knew”. Spirited versions of Take It Or Leave It, Shut Up and Mad Not Mad follow. Suggs’ “I’d like to introduce Paul King”-quip is met with boos, as Madness recently expressed their dislike of the fellow Dr Martens-wearers King (not helped by the ‘I’ll Compete’ caption that introduced a Paul King-interview).

Carl is booed as well because he reminds the crowd to pay their TV licence in 1986, even though he adds that the band were told to say this. Things keep up when Chris and Woody are respectively dubbed Simon Le Bon and Paul King. “If they carry on like that, we carry on like that” Carl responds to this childish behaviour. One joker tolls the bell, leaving the audience under the impression that the New Year has begun. “Not yet, not yet” Suggs corrects before the band launch into a mixedly received Yesterday’s Men. Creating a new tradition for the remaining shows of the decade, Suggs says “I hope so” in response to the “Will we be here in the long run’s?” It Must Be Love is greeted with more enthusiasm, once again proving its status as a never-failing crowd pleaser.

The encore is cut due to curfew-regulations, so no One Step Beyond to round off 1985. However, Suggs, Carl and Lorenza return to perform an unaccompanied version of the Irish traditional Auld Lang Syne with the enthusiastic crowd supplying extra vocals. Nine tracks are aired on radio, and ten on TV. Eight form the majority of the promo-album ‘Mad Not Mad Party’ with the November ‘Whistle Test’ session replacing tonight’s versions of Time and Burning The Boats which are partly broadcast. Released in March 1986, the album has since become a widely sought-after collector’s item.
